For my research project, I participated in "A Week of Three Good Things" in order to retain information and create an argument for my paper. Dr. Martin Seligman, the founder of Positive Psychology, encouraged the "Three Good Things" process, which is recording three gratitude moments that occur each day for an entire week. I will be using my gratitude journal to test out whether or not Dr. Seligman's process works, and if it improved my well-being. I recorded my gratitude moments for seven days, and they can be found in my blog post "A Week of Three Good Things."
After taking part in writing gratitude moment, I was happier afterwards and it seemed as though Martin Seligman's theory on improving well-being worked. It was easy to find sources to back up this research, but a little difficult to find sources on a counter argument. I know that this process might not work for everyone, and I am interested in discovering how it many not have worked for my classmates. To prove Seligman's theory, he came up with the PERMA model on happiness. This model helped me with my research which I provide in my blog post Benefits of the PERMA Model. This topic can also relate to my sociology course here at Delaware County Community College. I explain this in my blog post Connection to Sociology. Although there were aspects from my Sociology class that connect to this project, I decided to not include it in my second draft because it did not relate to my main argument.
For my research, I wanted to dig deeper and discover the science behind the "Three Good Things" process. This research allowed me to understand what happens when a gratitude moment would occur and to help support my argument. I found this research project very interesting, because I believe that there is a decrease of happiness in teenagers and young adults, people my age. I would say that I sometimes fall in this category, so improving my happiness and well-being sounded like a good idea. After some editing, I decided to write my introduction into a scene because it is important to inform and entertain the reader so the paper can be interesting to read. In the second draft, I wanted to enhance my writing and argument because mental health has become very prevalent in society. This research and data can be used to help others improve their well-being.
